Creating Private Henry Hicks

Earlier this year, I was asked by Fort Amherst to create an illustration of a Soldier that represented a man from the Napoleonic era.

Working with the educational and historical team of Medway Council and Fort Amherst, I came up with a series of drawings and colours.

After consulting with the team, the final design was complete.

At the River Festival hosted by the Historic Dockyard Chatham on Saturday 16th June, I saw the (almost) life size version of the Soldier.

It was such a pleasure to create a design that had meaning and local relevance to it.

All elements of the uniform and breed of dog came from historical evidence, and for it to be used to help educate a new generation, is very rewarding and I am very proud to be part of their journey.
